Connecting people to passion, potential, and community
The Sunset District of San Francisco is one of the most heavily populated high-needs districts in the state of California and has the highest percentage of growing families in the city. Since founding the Sunset Neighborhood Beacon Center (SNBC) in 1996, our mission has been to connect people of varying ages and backgrounds to the necessary resources while connecting them with the community. Through this program, we aid in helping families build relationships with others, develop new skills, and learn and grow together.
Specifically, SNBC offers daily afterschool and evening programs that provide additional academic support, adult programs including various arts and computer instruction offered in English and Cantonese, digital arts and media programs for youth, and full-service family resources consisting of education classes, counseling, parent support, and case management. The SNBC assists over 1,200 youth and 500 adults a year. Parents of many of these children speak very limited English, so we also offer our classes in several different languages as well as offering English as a Second Language courses.
With the support of the community, we hope that parents will be able to use our resources and the relationships they gain through our program to better care for and raise their children. We have discovered a special gift of those who are more experienced in the world that have a unique way of working with and helping the children in the SNBC program. We offer adults 55 and older an opportunity to volunteer with elementary and middle school students during and after school. This partnership has proven very effective for the students and they leave this program with long-lasting relationships. Our hope is that we can provide children and their families with the support and resources necessary to raise a child and bring out their inner hero.
