Funding for Encore AfterSchool is provided in part by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. Encore AfterSchool helps place experienced adults interested in working with children in afterschool program jobs providing income, meaning and purpose. These afterschool class leaders will work five afternoons a week, while enrichment activities coordinators can work two or three afternoons a week, creating a stronger, intergenerational workforce to support local schools.
Studies show that afterschool programs can reduce youth crime, violence, drug use, cut risky behaviors like smoking and alcohol abuse and boost self-esteem. Encore AfterSchool will further improve these programs by including talented, experienced staff providing enriching activities as part of a strengthened, intergenerational workforce.
“Bringing together the needs of young people for caring and consistent adult support, the talents of experienced workers, and the potential benefits of intergenerational connections for both youth and adults, produces a powerful win-win situation,” said Michael Funk, Director of Policy and Partnership at Aspiranet.
