Be a part of the Encore Career Movement

"Finding work that matters... in the second half of life!" ~ Marc Freedman, author of Encore

Aspiranet has just launched a new pilot initiative called Encore AfterSchool. With funding from the Packard and Koret Foundations, the goal of the program is to improve the quality of afterschool programs by creating a top-notch intergenerational workforce.

Within a year, Aspiranet hopes that 10 afterschool programs in both Oakland and San Jose, caring for thousands of underserved elementary school children, will benefit from stable, talented, experienced staff members recruited, trained and placed by Encore AfterSchool (EAS).

Encore AfterSchool exists to solve a very specific problem. With the increase of funding for California afterschool programs through Proposition 49, the number of afterschool programs in the state has doubled. The growth of afterschool programs and available positions makes it tougher to hire and retain qualified staff. Most afterschool programs hire college-age staff members looking for temporary, part-time work. Encore AfterSchool will recruit older adults and thereby offer an more stable, experienced workforce.

Encore AfterSchool will interview, screen, train and assist applicants with securing employment in after- school programs.

Applicants need:

  • Experience leading youth in any capacity i.e. coach, volunteer tutor, teacher, etc…
  • Willingness to work in an intergenerational environment
  • Ability to learn and apply various methods for educating youth and supporting youth development
  • Availability to commit to working after school between 2:00pm and 6:00pm
  • No teaching credential necessary.

Encore AfterSchool will provide:

  • Recruitment — Encore AfterSchool recruits experienced adults in San Jose and Oakland to work in afterschool programs.
  • Screening — Applicants will be screened through interviews and background checks before placement.
  • Training for staff — Encore instructors will receive training in afterschool practices, lesson planning and classroom management before finding placement in an afterschool program.
  • Training for employers — Programs hosting Encore instructors will receive training in intergenerational workforce practices before the beginning of the school year.
  • In-service training and check-in — Throughout the school year, Encore AfterSchool will perform frequent “check-ins” to ensure the success of Encore instructors and the programs in which they’re placed.

Encore AfterSchool is a direct outgrowth of the national movement toward what Civic Ventures’ founder Marc Freedman calls encore careers (www.encore.org). As people enter the second half of life and recognize they will need to continue working, they often are looking for work that provides income, meaning and purpose. Working in afterschool programs presents the opportunity to work part-time and improve the lives of school-age youth through enriching activities and positive support.

Aspiranet's interest in creating an environment to bring experienced adults to work with youth in various supportive and creative applications demonstrates its innovation in solving specific issues that communities are facing with the resources from within their own communities. Matching community needs with existing resources are how Aspiranet empowers communities and raises hope for all.
